The Contrapas

The dance of Andorra la Vella, popularised in the nineteenth century and held to be one of the roots of the sardana.

The Contrapas is the traditional dance of Andorra la Vella, popularised in the mid nineteenth century. The name (contra + pas, counter + step) describes the steps the dancers take in the opposite direction, and it is held to be one of the dances the sardana draws on.

It is danced at the Festa Major d'Andorra la Vella by the Esbart Dansaire, and the capital honours it with a monument on the Sant Esteve square.

The Festa Major d'Andorra la Vella runs from 31 July to 3 August 2026 — the best chance in the year to see the Contrapas danced.
